Argentina Transfers Food Regulatory Functions from ANMAT to SENASA

Argentina has introduced a significant institutional change in the oversight of food products through Decree 697/2026. Under the new measure, the National Administration of Medicines, Food and Medical Technology (ANMAT) will no longer be involved in procedures and regulatory activities related to foods, beverages, food supplements, packaging and food contact materials.

Responsibility for the registration, inspection, control and import authorisations of these products has been transferred to the National Service for Agri-Food Health and Quality (SENASA). SENASA will also be responsible for enforcing the provisions of the Argentinean Food Code within the scope of its competencies.

The reform is expected to centralise food regulatory oversight under a single authority, affecting both domestically produced and imported food products, including dietary supplements and packaging materials intended for food contact.

The change represents a major restructuring of Argentina’s food regulatory system and may have important implications for companies operating in the food, beverage and dietary supplement sectors.
