Italy has introduced a new labelling requirement for prepackaged products that undergo quantity reductions while being sold at the same or higher price. The measure applies to all consumer products, including food.
Effective 1 October 2025, the new measure requires manufacturers to inform consumers when a product’s quantity has been reduced without changes to its packaging, and the price per unit of measurement has increased as a result. This rule is applicable to products sold directly to the consumer along those sold indirectly through distributors.
This labelling obligation remains in place for six months from the date the affected product is first placed on the market.
The regulation is designed to enhance consumer awareness, particularly in situations where product downsizing, often referred to as “shrinkflation,” could otherwise go unnoticed.
