A draft regulation from the Minister of Health has been released proposing to regulatefood products sold to children and young people in educational institutions, as well as the standards for meals provided through institutional catering.
The regulation aims to restrict the access to foods high in sugar, fat, and salt in nurseries, schools, and care institutions. It also sets guidelines for meal composition in these settings.
Key points include:
1. Permitted food groups for sale: Items such as bread, sandwiches, salads, milk, fruit and vegetable smoothies, sugar-free chewing gum, and dark chocolate (minimum 70% cocoa) would be allowed. The sale of coffee would be banned in all educational institutions, regardless of the buyer’s age or how it is sold.
2. Nutritional standards for catering: Products like pastries, breakfast cereals, dairy and plant-based alternatives would need to meet specific limits for sugar, fat, and salt content.
