Turkish Plants Commission Recommends Adding Pine Cone Preparations and Cymbopogon martini Essential Oil to the Plant List
The Turkish Plants Commission published two scientific opinions on the safety of the following plants:
1. Pinus nigra, Pinus brutia and Pinus sylvestris cones
The Plants Commission concluded that the liquid product obtained by boiling the green cones of P. nigra, P. brutia and P. sylvestris species in water must comply with the limits specified in the Turkish Food Codex Grape Molasses Regulation in terms of HMF and contaminants, and the label must include the footnote: "Product description: The liquid product obtained by boiling green cones in water, removing the foam, then filtering and boiling again with or without the addition of sugar." and "Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and children aged 6 and under should consult a doctor before use.”
With this condition, it has been recommended that the plant be added to the Plant List as a positive (P) entry.
2. Essential oil portion of Cymbopogon martini (Roxb.) Will. Watson
The Plants Commission concluded that the essential oil of Cymbopogon martini plant should be added to the Plant List as a positive (P) entry, provided that:
It can only be used in food supplements and in enteric-coated form.
The label of products containing this plant should include the warning: “This product contains geraniol. The daily intake of geraniol should not exceed 35 mg. If geraniol-containing foods are consumed on the same day, the use of this product is not recommended. It should not be used by pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and individuals under 18 years of age.”
