The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) published its opinion on the characterisation and evaluation of the health impacts of the consumption of the so-called ultra processed foods (UPFs).
According to ANSES, the current method of classifying foods based on how processed they are cannot be used to infer health risks. As such, it is not possible to use this as a tool for nutrition education.
Beyond the issue of ultra-transformation, the Agency recalls the importance of measuring the effectiveness of all the collective action levers already implemented to achieve the recommended food references as well as the levels of daily physical activity and sedentary breakdown recommended for the general population.
