The 44th session of the Codex Committee on Methods of Analysis and Sampling (CCMAS) concluded with the adoption of its report.

To keep the Recommended Methods of Analysis and Sampling (CXS 234-1999) current, the Committee reviewed its fruit juices and cocoa/chocolate workable packages. Some analytical methods for fruit juices will be forwarded to CAC48 for endorsement, while others—especially those without numerical criteria—will undergo further expert review.

Agreements were also reached on methods for cocoa and chocolate products, though some items were referred back for further electronic review. CCMAS44 also initiated review work on methods for sugars and honey.

The Committee agreed to publish a long-developed document offering detailed guidance on sampling plans, linked to the General Guidelines on Sampling (CXG 50-2004). Work continues on sampling plans for bulk malterials/heterogeneous lots, including those involving mycotoxins.

Further, numeric criteria were agreed for detecting nitrate and nitrite ions in food to support Codex work on additives, and efforts will continue on allergen labelling methods to support food labelling initiatives.
