The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has released the fourth edition of its Compendium of Botanicals. The new edition now includes 2801 plant species reported to contain naturally occurring substances of potential concern for human and animal health.
The Compendium is designed to support EFSA's scientific experts, EU and national risk managers, and food business operators engaged in food supplements and novel foods in identifying substances of potential concern during safety assessments.
Some of the new features include:

  • A list of 1538 substances of potential concern which are naturally occurring in botanicals;
  • Information on plant composition and toxicity data;
  • Case studies and risk assessment examples
