Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has approved updated definitions for genetically modified (GM) food in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. These changes, developed under Proposal P1055, modernise terminology to align with current gene technologies while maintaining strong food safety protections.

FSANZ CEO emphasised that the new outcome-based definitions focus on the nature of genetic changes rather than the methods used. This approach aligns with international regulatory trends in countries like Canada, Japan, and England.

The updates support consistent GM food assessment and labelling, uphold existing safety and labelling requirements, and promote innovation and trade. The decision now awaits consideration by Australian and New Zealand food ministers within a 60-day review period.
