On 22 January, Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, presented the priorities of the Polish Presidency before the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Securing Europe is the order of the Polish Presidency.
Mr. Tusk identified 7 elements of European security, including economic security. Within the context of economic security, Mr. Tusk called for making Europe the most innovative and creative economy again. Mr. Tusk noted that European competitiveness is at stake and stressed the need to take action.
Food security is another priority for the Polish Presidency. In this regard, the Presidency aims to bolster food security and the agricultural sector through policies which ensure that non-EU producers comply with EU food quality, safety, and sustainability standards.
Poland assumed presidency of the Council of the EU in January. The EU Council Presidency rotates every 6 months among Member States on an 18-months trio basis. The Polish Presidency marks the beginning of a new presidency trio. It will be followed by Denmark and Cyprus.
