In its last Claims Working Group meeting on 21 November 2024, the European Commission (EC) and Member States discussed details for pending final decisions on health claims applications, for which EFSA has already provided its scientific opinion.

For an application of ‘green kiwifruit and maintenance of normal defecation’, for which EFSA has provided a positive opinion, the WG was presented with a draft Commission Regulation. The WG discussed to add the volume of kiwi fruit needed to achieve the claimed effect to the conditions of use. The EC will verify the claim's legal wording before the next meeting to present a revised proposal.

As regards the health claims application ‘Citicoline supports memory function in healthy middle aged and elderly persons’ with negative EFSA opinion outcome, the WG saw no objection to its rejection. Additionally, a positive EFSA opinion on the pending claim ‘choline and contribution to normal liver function of the foetus and exclusively breastfed infants’ sparked debate over its benefits for children's liver function due to a lack of specific human studies. Belgium presented a study on 'probiotics' labelling, with further confidential discussions to follow.
